On Thursday, May 1st, students and faculty at Hawthorn celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Dr. McCleary addressed the school to discuss the significance of the day and to pray a decade of the Rosary. Afterwards, students enjoyed athletic contests, parachute games, egg and spoon relays, and other activities followed by pizza and ice cream. In the afternoon, all students participated in the Competition of the Bard. Judges listened to poetry recitations by representative students from each grade level, and each class performed a musical selection.
In the Primary School category, Nicolette Hutter was awarded a prize for her recitation of “The Fairies” by William Allingham. In the Lower School, Rosa Andino was recognized for her performance of “The Builders” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Jacob Macalintal for his recitation of “The Frog” by Hilaire Belloc. In Middle School, Amelia Oliver won the prize for her performance of Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare. An honorable mention was awarded to 9th grader Aidan Minton for his recitation of “Ozymandias”.
For the musical selections, the 1st Grade class was recognized for their spirited performance of Eerie Canal. Girls in Grades 2-5 were awarded a prize for their beautiful rendition of Scarborough Fair, and the 9th Grade Boys, led by Nate Park, were recognized for their bold performance of the Irish ballad, The Rising of the Moon.
